We are seeking motivated Post-doctoral candidates, PhD students to study luminance-dependent modulation of retinal function.

The mammalian retina maintains high sensitivity over an extraordinary range of luminance levels, ranging from starlight to bright sunlight. This is achieved by switching between the rod and cone systems, and within each system, by employing light adaptation mechanisms that preserve a contrast-invariant response. While dopamine is known to modulate retinal network activity in proportion to luminance, the luminance-dependent signals and the circuits that transmit them to elicit light adaptation, remain elusive. Our work identified a family of luxotonic amacrine cells in which activity increases with luminance level and are poised to modulate retinal function in a luminance-dependent manner. We determine the kinetics of the synaptic input to luxotonic amacrine cells, identify their pre- and postsynaptic partners, and test their role in retinal light adaptation. Implementing optogenetics, chemogenetics, functional imaging, whole-cell electrophysiology, and serial section electron microscopy, this study will help further our understanding of a fundamental adaptive mechanism in a key sensory modality.

Successful candidates will show solid communication skills in English, ability to work both independently and as part of a research team, strong scientific motivation, proved experience in patch-clamp electrophysiology, and skill in Matlab or python programming. Experience in optogenetics or two-photon imaging would be an advantage.

Structure, function and biogenesis of mitoribosomes of Trypanosoma brucei

We are seeking a PhD student to work on mitochondrial ribosomes and translation in Trypanosoma brucei. Ribosomes were recently shown to undergo unexpected diversification in endosymbiotic organelles. The most divergent ribosomes are found in the mitochondria of parasitic protists from the group of Kinetoplastids, including trypanosomes. We complement cryoEM structural information on mitoribosomes and precursors with functional approaches to get insight into lineage specific features of translation in mitochondria of trypanosomes and to understand how the mitoribosomes co-evolved with the peculiar gene expression in the parasite's mitochondria.

The successful applicant will work under the supervision of Ondrej Gahura in the group of A. Zikova, at the Institute of Parasitology, Biology Centre of the Czech Academy of Science in Ceske Budejovice (Budweiss), Czech Republic. Our institute is located in the joint campus of Czech Academy and Science and University of Science Bohemia, providing an international and multidisciplinary scientific environment.

We seek a senior scientist capable of leading an interdisciplinary team of researchers to work in any fields related to environmental and social epidemiology; population modelling & public health and/or bioinformatics & biostatistics.

The ERA Chair will be supported by the R-Exposome project, funded from the prestigious Horizon 2020 (ERA Chair) programme (Project nr. 857487). The ERA Chair is to establish a world-class team to conduct pioneering research which investigates environmental exposures and their health outcomes.
